Being a good reader sometimes means saying NO

Ever get bogged down in a book that you don't really like but feel you should finish? Why stick it out? There are more books out there than you can ever get to, and serious readers learn to cut their losses so that they can get to the enjoyable and informative more quickly. You probably intend to clear off your nightstand around the holidays, so give yourself a break and ditch the books you dread going back to. Learn to let go!

I've never really had a problem with this. I got a chuckle from the part in the article where Leveen traced the habit back to school days, when we had to finish a book for class.

When I was in college, I decided to *force* myself to read all those classic American novels I was supposed to have read by taking a class called, "The Great American Novel." I still couldn't get more than 50 pages into Moby Dick (or half of the 8 or 9 novels I was supposed to read for the class).

heh, I had a friend in college who made it her quest to finish an English major without ever taking a class that required Moby Dick. she managed it, too!
